Unwanted hair on the face, arms, or legs can be removed via plucking, but this can damage the skin and cause discomfort. Waxing can produce uneven results, and the hair grows back in a few months. Damage to the follicles results in a more permanent removal of hair. Intense pulsed light therapy, or IPL therapy, is a proven means of getting rid of unwanted hair for good. This is a bit similar to laser hair removal, but it’s considered more effective because the adjacent tissues are not affected. Pulsed light energy heats up and damages the follicle, and the procedure can be customized to target specific follicle tone. The advancements made in IPL device design have made this one of the most popular hair removal treatments available today.
How the Device Works
An IPL device is a handheld instrument that produces short pulses of broadband light energy. Broadband refers to a wide range of the spectrum. Various wavelengths can be emitted simultaneously. The energy is therefore made up of several frequencies that, when mixed together, are absorbed only by a specific range of color-bearing tissues.
For example, a hair follicle is basically the same tone as the dead hair cells it’s producing. If the hair is brown, so is the follicle. The IPL device is calibrated to deliver a pulsed beam of energy that will be absorbed by tissues of brown tone. The energy passes right through the epidermis and is instead absorbed by the follicle. The follicle is damaged, and it will soon be discarded as waste material. The hair strand emanating from it will fall out. The unwanted hair is gone for good.
This type of hair removal treatment only works if it’s repeated multiple times. The idea is to leave no follicles behind. We will calibrate the IPL device based on our observations of the skin tone, skin thickness, and hair tone. The device has a cooling tip, and this prevents the skin from heating up. The tip is placed on the skin surface, and the lamp is flashed for two or three milliseconds. After several ultra-pulses, the device is moved a bit so the next area of skin surface can be treated.
A short series of treatment sessions are scheduled to ensure that all of the follicles have been damaged. We’ll also schedule a follow-up examination to see the progress of the follicle elimination.
In most cases, the follicles will not regrow. No special follow-up care is required on the part of the patient. Some of our patients report complete absence of hair in the treated areas years after IPL therapy. This is a non-invasive treatment that’s easier on the skin than laser tissue cauterization. The newer IPL devices can be calibrated to a high degree, meaning that the client’s skin tone has little to do with the effectiveness of the treatment.
